For 2009, ELTF awards will be offered nationally to trainee language teachers of Arabic, Chinese, Japanese and Korean to participate in in-country study programs in Jordan, China, Japan and Korea respectively.
While the specific arrangements may vary across study programs, each study program will include three weeks of intensive language and cultural study. The language study component of the program will focus primarily on improving awardees’ proficiency in the language, not on teaching methodologies.
In-country program awardees will also have the opportunity to visit a variety of sites, make local contacts where possible, be exposed to contemporary life, as well as to immerse themselves in the language through day-to-day interactions.
The Bahasa Indonesia program will be delivered in Darwin, Northern Territory, at the Charles Darwin University. Successful applicants will be provided with full details in October 2008. This program will comprise a three-week residential intensive language study and cultural program.
The Bahasa Indonesia program will focus on strengthening language proficiency with opportunity to explore teaching methodology for Indonesian language programs in Australian schools. Indonesian language specialists, including native language speaking tutors from Indonesia, will be integral to the program and awardees will have the opportunity to immerse themselves in the language through day-to-day interactions in a range of activities.
Awardees can expect cultural activities and structured opportunities to interact with Indonesian native speakers as a regular feature of the Bahasa Indonesia Program. Awardees will also have the opportunity to access realia from Indonesia (eg posters, audio/visual resources, etc) for use in their classrooms.
Should an overseas in-country ELTF Bahasa Indonesia program be offered by DEEWR in the future, awardees in this Bahasa Indonesia program held in Australia will be allowed to apply.
