The Finnish Government offers scholarships to Australians for postgraduate studies, research and teaching for 3-9 months at a higher education institution or public research institute in Finland. Please note that Masters' courses are not considered as postgraduate studies in Finland. These scholarships are meant for postgraduate studies or research and that priority will be given to doctoral studies.
The scholarship authorities in each cooperating country are invited to present applications for up to 10 candidates for the Finnish Government Scholarships Pool. The deadline for the nomination of scholarship candidates by the national authorities in each cooperating country is 1 February 2009.

The scholarship includes
- a monthly allowance of EUR 1200. The allowance is sufficient for one person only.
Travel expenses
Travel expenses (international or in Finland) are not covered by CIMO.
Insurance
It is recommended that scholarship recipients make arrangements for sufficient insurance coverage for their stay in Finland.
Duration
Scholarships can be granted for periods of three (3) to nine (9) months. The academic year in Finland lasts from September to May. The autumn term begins in September and ends by 20 December. The spring term starts in January and ends in May.

- Completed and signed application form;
- Curriculum vitae;
- Copies recent educational qualifications;
- Two letters of recommendation;
- Study/research plan (1-2 pages);
- Invitation from the academic supervisor in Finland and;
- Language certificate (Finnish, Swedish or English).

Scholars, postgraduate students, researchers and artists are being offered a number of awards under the Foreigners’ Fellowships Programme to study in Greece. The programme also includes a number of awards for Primary and Secondary teachers of the Greek language. Further information about the programme as well as the application form is available from the

Applications for the 15th Foreigners' Fellowships Programme open 15 November 2008 and close on 31 January 2009 for the academic year 2009 - 2010. Application forms can be found on the above website. Successful applicants can start their scholarships on 1 October 2009.
The Royal Embassy of Saudi Arabia in Canberra advises that several universities in Saudi Arabia offer places for Australian students to undertake Arabic language studies. The Embassy is seeking nominations for these scholarships.
The scholarship opportunities include:
- King Abdul Aziz University, Jeddah has offered two places for Australian students to undertake studies in the Arabic Language Department, as well as offering to receive a number of other students to study the Arabic language for one semester, or to undertake other Arabic language courses of study;
- King Saud University, Riyadh has already assigned one scholarship for the study of the Arabic language;
- Umm Al-Qura University, Mecca has made available two scholarships for the study of the Arabic language (please note that by virtue of its location, students enrolled at this University must be Muslims); and
- Imam Mohammad bin Saud University, Riyadh has made available five scholarships for the study of the Arabic language by Australian students in a course extending over a two year period.

The Ministry of National Education of the Republic of Turkey will provide three higher education scholarships and two Turkish language and culture summer course scholarships to Australian students in the 2008 – 2009 academic year.

The Stanford Humanities Centre (SHC) and the Freeman Spogli Institute for International Studies (FSI) will jointly award two international studies fellowships for the academic year 2008-2009 to junior or senior scholars who are not US nationals.
The proposals by applicants should focus on the themes of international studies compatible with the mission of one of the research centres:
- The Walter H Shorenstein Asia/Pacific Research Centre (Shorenstein APARC);
- Centre on Democracy, Development and the Rule of Law (CDDRL);
- Centre for Health Policy (CHP/PCOR);
- Centre for International Security and Cooperation (CISAC); or
- The Forum on Contemporary Europe (FCE).
Eligible areas include, but are not limited to: history, philosophy, languages, linguistics, archaeology, ethics, comparative religion, and the history and criticism of the arts. Proposals are welcome from the social sciences employing historical or philosophical approaches, such as social and cultural anthropology, sociology, political theory and other subjects concerned with questions of value. Fellows are awarded stipends of up to $60,000 (USD) and a housing and moving allowance of up to $15,000 (USD), dependent upon need. The Ministry of Higher Education in the State of Kuwait have allocated one scholarship for Australia in the subject of Arabic Language Studies at the Kuwait University for 2008/2009. This course will be conducted at the languages centre of the University.
The Ministry of Higher Education in the State of Kuwait will pay all expenses for the duration of the course.
Applications for the scholarship should be received between 24 April and 3 August 2008.

The German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) promotes relations between German and Higher Education institutions abroad, through student exchange, academics and scientists. DAAD is Germany's largest scholarship-awarding organisation and runs several programs with academic exchange between Germany and all parts of the world are supported.
The scholarships offered by DAAD are awarded to advanced students, higher education graduates and academics from fields of science, humanities, music and art. These programs range from short-term exchanges for research or teaching through to doctoral scholarships lasting several years.

The United Kingdom has recently announced its intention to terminate support for Commonwealth Scholarships for citizens of eight countries, including Australia. In view of this, it is unlikely that any further calls for applications will be invited under the program for the foreseeable future. Scholars who commenced in 2008 will not be effected.

The Board of the Agri-Food Industry Skills Council is pleased to announce a new Agri-Food International Fellowship to study overseas. The fellowship is aimed particularly at established, highly capable and experienced industry practitioners who may have broad technical expertise or a record of achievement in their fields. It will promote the acquisition of new skills, knowledge and innovative ideas overseas, and to see these findings delivering benefits to the Agri-Food Industry in Australia.
The fellowship is valued at $10,000 and will enable the award winner to undertake an overseas study program.The entries close on 5 September and the winner will be announced during the Agri-Food National Conference in Melbourne on 25 September 2008. The fellowship is an initiative under the ISS Institute 'Overseas Skills Acquisition Plan (Overseas Fellowships)' and is funded by the Agri-Food Industry Skills Council.
